Seedlings

The garden is almost complete! It's getting a little crowded out there. I've got 4 window boxes, a couple of large pots, and a set of shelves for my smaller plants.

Since we are renting, we couldn't make any changes to the actual structure of the balcony, so we had to improvise with our window boxes. With some knot tying help from the magnificently crafty boyfriend, I got some cheap window boxes at Home Depot, drilled holes in the sides, and secured them to the balcony with nylon car towing rope. (I'm telling you, we're really improvising here.) The pots are hanging out on a pie rack from my sweet grandma and taking over our little patio table for now. I scoured the Whole Foods and Lamberts grocery stores I frequent for lunch and ended up with a wide array of green sprouty things.

All edibles are in a few different types of organic potting soil, from Whole Foods and the local hardware store. The flowers are in a Miracle Gro seed starter.

Strawberries!

Peas! We (read: boyfriend) did some serious knot tying and string maneuvering for these.

Basil!

Begonias!

Ranunculus! (And Owl Buddy)

Sweet Red Peppers!

Broccoli!

Lavender! (which has grown 2 inches already)

Alyssum!

Cilantro!

Jalapeno Peppers!

Baby's Tears!

The garden in its entirety.

We've also got a nice little lime tree from last summer. It's not doing too hot, so we're going to try it in some new soil and see how that goes. I'd also love to grab a tomato plant if I can find one more teeny patch of sunlight out there.

We'll see if the minimal sun is enough for these babies, but so far they are growing! I now need to tackle pruning, watering properly, and harvesting! More of my achievements and follies to come.

Planting seeds

The purpose of this blog is simple. To chronicle my experiences, mistakes, and victories in balcony gardening from three stories up.

We live in an apartment at the back of our building. The good news - we have a balcony. The bad news - it doesn't get a lot of sun.

I decided to try a container garden on the balcony anyway.

This is not intended as an educational garden blog, per se. I have little to no expertise in gardening and this is my first attempt at container gardening. I may very well kill half of my plants. But I want to keep track of my meager garden and share my "techniques". If they work, feel free to try them. If not, do the opposite? Or just read along and laugh at me. That works too. Here goes nothing...
